05-September-2010 - Season Preview 2009-10The RDTTA league season for 2010/11 gets underway Monday 13th September with 63 teams across the six main divisions, plus 12 teams in the Youth Division.
Division 1 looks like being a two horse race with reigning champions Kingfisher A firm favourites to retain their title. They can expect stiff competition this year from YMCA A who have pooled together their top 4 players in Martin Chodounsky, Bob Davis, Andy Misseldine and Tony Reynolds following the re-formation of their B team. Polish A will challenge if Martin Adams plays regularly and YMCA B won’t be too far away either with Dave Streak and Neil Hurford in their squad.
The Our Lady of Peace challenge may not occur this year with Daniel Moses and Liam & Daniel McTiernan all called up for regular England coaching sessions each week. As a result their appearances in the Reading league will be limited. Each of the three OLOP teams in Div.1 has registered one of these players which should ensure that all three teams finish in a comfortable mid-table position.
At the foot of the table it will be a tough battle to avoid the drop. Tidmarsh A should have enough to avoid any trouble, while Promoted Kingfisher B bring in Megan Knowles to their squad alongside regulars Cliff Putterford, Geoff Civil, Colin Dyke and Eric Van-Looy. Those most in danger of the drop appear to be Kingfisher C and promoted Tidmarsh B.
In Division 2 relegated Sonning Common & Peppard A should benefit from their season in Div.1 and figure highly. Others likely to challenge will be Sonning C& P B, Kingfisher D, Kingfisher F and last season’s surprise outfit Wokingham A. Curzon Club A also have the potential to move into the top half while it is worth keeping an eye on reprieved Sonning Sports A with Frank Wiegand a good player at this level.
On paper promoted OLOP E and Kingfisher F look to have most to do to avoid the drop. Hanson Xu will benefit from the experience of playing in Div.2 alongside Wendy Porter for the OLOP side, while the Kingfisher F squad look like they might struggle at this level.
It will be interesting to see how the Kingfisher junior trio of Leo Long, Michael Houghton and George Dodd cope with the step up to Division 3. Dave Mills, Andrew Walker, Denise Weller and George White should see Post Office B start as favourites for promotion with Tidmarsh D, Tilehurst Methodist A and Sonning C&P C also likely to challenge.
At the foot promoted Springfield A, Kingfisher G and OLOP G will do well to avoid trouble, while both Pangbourne WMC and OLOP F should have enough to finish comfortably mid-table
In Division 4 Milestone A will be keen to make a swift return to Div.3 after their unfortunate relegation last season. Hugh Crosfield, John Crosfield and a fit again John Tucker will see them up with the leading pack. However their appears to be a number of strong teams at this level this season and Milestone can expect stiff competition from the likes of a promoted and strengthened Polish C team, St Laurence Church, promoted Sonning C&P E who now include Tony House and Mark Corbett in their side and Tilehurst Methodist B.
Both Curzon Club teams should finish comfortably in mid-table leaving Tidmarsh E, Sonning C&P D and Wokingham B looking to stave off the threat of relegation. Matt Stone’s form could keep Sonning C&P out of trouble while every point will count for all these teams in a tightly packed division.
OLOP H with Alistair Richardson, Chris Moses and Dave Godfrey in their side and relegated Birch Copse A look the most likely promotion candidates from Division 5, however the Tilehurst Methodist C team with experienced Dave Jones, Martin Wetherell and Bob Winter in their side may just start as favourites. Promoted Polish D may also figure highly.
Tidmarsh F, Milestone B and Post Office C look to have enough strength in depth to finish mid-table, while a season of struggle looks likely for Sonning C&P F, Springfield B and Kingfisher I. Springfield’s experience having stepped up to this level last year may count in their favour while Kingfisher bring in Maureen Allchurch from Reading Resource to bolster their squad.
Division 6 is very difficult to call with no obvious promotion candidates. Birch Copse B, Springfield C and Kingfisher J may emerge as contenders, while it is always foolish to ignore any OLOP side, but their squad has yet to be completed.
At the bottom Sonning Sports B (previously Berks Sports B) may have a better season than previously, Sonning C&P G will also be looking for an improved season and will be giving a chance to some of their emerging junior players, while Polish E will also be giving league debuts to several players.

READING SENIOR MASTERS
The Reading Masters is a special event on the Reading Table Tennis calendar with both the Junior and Senior events held side by side and a host of top players battling for the prize. The senior event saw some brilliant table tennis throughout. Our Senior Masters winner, having lost earlier in his group to Liam McTiernan (13-11 in the fifth) but beating him in the final.
READING SENIOR MASTERS – WINNER: Hari Gehlot
READING SENIOR MASTERS – RUNNER-UP: Liam McTiernan
READING JUNIOR MASTERS The Reading Junior Masters saw a disappointing turn out of just 6 players from the 10 invited, however nothing should detract from the quality of table tennis shown by our winners.
READING JUNIOR MASTERS WINNER: Hanson Xu
READING JUNIOR MASTERS R/UP: Danny Ricks
STANDARD CUP FOR THE MOST IMPROVED JUNIOR
The recipient of the Standard Cup this year for the most improved junior has had an outstanding season in Division 3. She has shown considerable improvement throughout the season improving from picking up just single victories now and then and ending up with regular 2s and 3s. In National tournaments she has recently won 2 four star banded events. She has made significant progress thanks to the coaches at Kingfisher TTC and she has a bright future in the sport.
Awarded to: MEGAN KNOWLES
EDLESTON CUP – BEST JUNIOR PERFORMANCE
There were a couple of excellent performances for your committee to consider this year. However it was felt that this season one particular person topped the lot. This years winner of the Edleston Cup for best junior performance goes to a terrific young lad who has made exceptional progress this season. At the Reading closed he played an incredible 35 games of table tennis! Where he won 5 titles. He was the No.1 Reading player in the National Junior League, he had won 9 or 11 singles matches while playing up in Division 1 (80%), and had won a Gold Medal at the recent Primary School championships.
Awarded to: DANIEL McTIERNAN.
HAROLD LARCOMBE SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD
Committee members had no hesitation in supporting the nomination of this years recipient. This person started playing in the Reading League back in 1959 (that’s 51 years ago!). His first club was St Catherine’s, followed by Curzon Club, NALGO and now Tidmarsh. His demeanour has always been of the highest sporting nature as any of his opponents will testify. He gets beaten more often than not these days, but he always plays with good will and grace and more importantly enjoys playing. This season he got 31% to help keep his team, Tidmarsh E in Division 4 and he did so with his usual good grace, win or lose.
Awarded to Tidmarsh E’s: DAVE SMITH.
ETTA MERIT AWARDThere was also an award to a very special person in Reading Table Tennis who is known by most people who play table tennis in Reading.
The ETTA has a special award for those who have had considerable service as an elected official over a number of years and who have made a significant contribution to the administration of the game at either County or Local League level. This person had served in various roles from 1971 to 1980 and return to committee in 2005 as Development Officer. In between that time he has continually served in an unofficial capacity as a coach, helping develop Reading’s youngsters at OLOP, at the Reading Youth Division, most recently at Sonning Common & Peppard as well as numerous schools and activities across the borough. He has transported junior and cadets all over the country as he helps them achieve their goal and become better players. He has been a Life Member of the Reading Association since 1978.
The Maurice Goldstein ETTA Merit award was presented to: ALAN DINES

Reports were presented under items 5 - 10.

PROPOSED RULE AND FEE CHANGES
1. From the Committee
Rule 7.2.1 - The amount of the Team Affiliation Fee shall be determined as £16.50
Note: The Association will no longer have to pay an affiliation fee to ETTA as players now affiliate individually, hence the reduction from £33 per team. The remaining fee is to cover affiliation to the RCBTTA.
- the proposal was carried unanimously.
2. From the Committee
Rule 7.4.1 Add new sentence - “The amount shall include an amount for Player Member Individual Affiliation with the ETTA unless evidence is provided that the fee has already been paid.
Note: If evidence is provided that the fee for any player has already been paid (either direct to the ETTA or via another League) then the amount due shall be £14. Otherwise the amount must include an ETTA Player Member Individual Affiliation fee (expected to be £5.64 for season 2010/11) making a total amount due of £19.64.
Discussion at AGM:
Mike Burrow asked whether there was further information available on Individual Registration and that payment could also be made through Premier Clubs. The Chairman said that at the Berkshire AGM the previous week he had been informed that more specific guidance would be issued by the ETTA shortly and he would copy this to all club secretaries.
Pete Bradley confirmed that the fee would be set at the ETTA AGM but it was expected that the Player Member fee would be £5.64 seniors and £2.82 Juniors. It was expected that many leagues would find Individual Registration difficult in the first year but there should be far fewer problems in subsequent years.
- the proposal was carried unanimously.
3. From the Committee
Rule 7.8 Line 1 - Amend £6.00 to read £8.00
Note: This is an increase of £2 for the production costs of the Newsletter in order to break even next season.
- the proposal was carried unanimously.
4. From the Committee
Rule 7.2 line 2. Delete "and ETTA".
Note: The Association will no longer have to pay an affiliation fee to ETTA.
- the proposal was carried unanimously.
5. From The Committee
Rule 10.5.2. Change to read "An entry from a registered player other than a junior, who is a Player Member of ETTA but who does not qualify under Rule 10.5.1 may be accepted at the discretion of the Management Committee."
Rule 10.5.3. Change to read "A junior player who is a member of the Association and is a Player Member of ETTA but who does not qualify under Rule 10.5.1 may be accepted at the discretion of the Management Committee."
Note: Prior to Individual Affiliation a person affiliated to ETTA is only permitted to play “Competitive Table Tennis” with or against any other person affiliated to ETTA or under the auspices of an “Organisation in Good Standing” with ETTA. It may be seen that our existing Rule is not legal. Following Individual Affiliation no-one will be allowed to play “Competitive Table Tennis” unless he or she is a “Player Member” having paid the appropriate fee to ETTA and it would be an offence to permit anyone to do so.
- the proposal was carried unanimously.
Discussion at AGM: Mike Burrow asked whether those playing in Internal Club Competitions only would need to be Player Members. Pete Bradley said that they only need become Associate Members and that it was his impression that such members and non playing volunteers would get Associate Membership free. Colin Dyke said that anyone who wished to play competitive table tennis needed to become a Player Member. He also said we should not worry about having a registered Player Member number before the league season starts.
6. From the Committee
Re-number Rules 12.2.5 to 12.2.7 to be 12.2.6 to 12.2.8 and then insert new Rule "12.2.5. All applications for registration must be accompanied by the ETTA Player Member affiliation fee unless evidence is provided that the fee has already been paid."
Note: This will be required by ETTA Rule.
- the proposal was carried unanimously.
7. From The Committee
Rule 5 Delete Management Committee Post "Junior Representative" and rename the Junior Inter-Town Match Secretary post "Junior Rep & Junior Competitions secretary"
Note: There is confusion at Committee meetings as to what aspects of junior topics should be discussed under each current post and it is felt that a merged post would be beneficial.
- the proposal was carried unanimously.
ANY OTHER BUSINESS
Discussion on the impact of ETTA rule change propositions 11 & 12 as follows:
Proposition 11
Add to the ETTA Laws of Table Tennis:
2.X The racket covering shall be of a brand and type currently authorised by the ITTF.
Proposition 12 (If the previous proposition is accepted)
Add new section:
47 PLAYING EQUIPMENT
47.1 For all competitive table tennis
47.1.1 the ball shall be of a brand and grade currently approved by the ITTF
47.1.2 the racket covering shall be of a brand and type currently authorised by the ITTF;
47.2 The list of ITTF approved balls which is in force on 1st July shall be circulated to all Affiliated Organisations and Organisations in Good Standing not later than 8th July and shall be valid until the following 30th June.
47.3 The list of authorised racket covering valid from 1st January to 30th June shall be circulated to all Affiliated Organisations and Organisations in Good Standing not later that the preceding 15th November; the list valid from 1st July to 31st December shall be circulated not later than the preceding 15th May.
Discussion at AGM: Pete Bradley said that two lists were issued by the ITTF each year, but in principle there were seldom any significant changes between the two lists. He felt there was nothing that would affect most league players, unless using very old rubber.

20-April-2010 - Reading Masters 2010
Hari Gehlot won a second successive Reading Senior Masters title after avenging an early group defeat to up and coming Liam McTiernan to beat his young opponent in an enthralling final contest 11-8 8-11 11-7 11-8.
Hanson Xu picked up his first Master Junior title by defeating Danny Ricks in the final.
The Senior Masters saw two groups of five players with the top two in each group qualifying for the semi-finals. In Group 1 both Hari Gehlot and Liam McTiernan qualified. In an often hot tempered group Hari opened his defence with an 11-6 12-10 11-7 victory over his brother Ramesh, before going on to beat Tony Reynolds 12-10 8-11 11-4 11-2 and Phil Prady 11-7 11-9 11-7. Liam started with a very close and high quality contest against Tony Reynolds which he eventually won 13-11 11-5 6-11 11-9 before going on to manage comfortable wins over both Phil Prady and Ramesh Gehlot. The final match in the group saw Liam win a classic match against Hari 3-11 11-8 11-6 6-11 13-11 to see him finish top and Hari second.
Phil Prady surpassed all expectations to finish 3rd, beating Ramesh 9-11 6-11 11-7 11-7 11-9 and Tony Reynolds 11-8 11-7 5-11 11-5, while Tony finished 4th ahead of Ramesh after beating him in another close contest 15-13 10-12 13-11 11-7.
In Group 2 Martin Chodounsky and Mark Banks lived up to their billing to finish 1st and 2nd respectively. Martin, playing in his first Reading Masters, opened with an 11-8 11-9 11-7 victory over YMCA club team mate Bob Davis before going on to edge past an in-form Steve Murgatroyd 13-11 11-9 15-13. Mark also just held off Steve in his opener 11-13 11-2 11-7 11-9 before going on to clinch his semi-final place with wins over Bob Davis and Graham Diplock. Martin finished top of the group after recovering from a 6-10 fifth game deficit to defeat Mark 2-11 11-8 9-11 11-4 12-10.
Steve Murgatroyd always produces his best at the Masters and he finished 3rd in the group, beating Bob Davis and Graham Diplock in 4 games, while Bob managed an 11-9 11-3 7-11 11-4 win against Graham to finish in 4th place.
In the semi-finals Liam McTiernan rode his luck at times as he defeated Mark Banks in 3-straight games 11-9 11-8 11-9. In the other semi-final Hari Gehlot took the first against Martin Chodounsky 11-7 only for Martin to hit back well to level, taking the next game 12-10. Hari re-established control to win the third 11-5 and was 10-6 up in the next with a final place in his grasp. However Martin rallied to level at 10-all. Hari though held his nerve to close out the game 12-10. The final then was a repeat of their earlier group encounter between Liam and Hari. Hari always had the edge in the first game, moving 6-2 ahead and holding that to lead to 10-6. Liam briefly closed to just 10-8 behind, but with Hari pulling his opponent wide with each return, he managed to close out the game 11-8. In the next a fantastic opening point went to Liam, but Hari then took control to lead 5-1 with some excellent play from both players. Liam clawed his way back to 5-3 behind and as Hari missed a couple of opportunities all of a sudden it was 7-all. A key point saw Liam grab a 9-8 lead and when Hari then served into the net Liam took his chance to snatch a game that had looked beyond him 11-8.
Hari again started well in the next game, quickly building a 5-2 lead. Liam again rallied briefly in the middle of the game to close to within two points at 8-6, but Hari pulled clear to take a 2-1 game advantage by winning the third game 11-7. Another stunning opening rally in the 4th game ended with Hari returning a ball off the top of the net and dropping dead on the other side of the table to give him the first point. From there he went 3-0 ahead, only for Liam to hit back well to level at 3-3 and then incredibly go 6-3 up after taking 6 points in a row. This time Hari upped his game to level at 6-all. In a gripping game Liam’s serve drifted just a bit too high, allowing Hari to pounce for a 10-8 advantage giving him two championship points, which he duly took at the first attempt to win 11-8 8-11 11-7 11-8.
In the Junior Masters Hanson Xu won both his group matches to clinch his semi final place, beating Leo Long 11-6 11-9 2-11 11-8 and Sam Ricks 11-8 11-1 17-15. Sam also made the semi-finals after a narrow victory over Leo 11-7 9-11 7-11 11-9 12-10. In the other group Danny Ricks finished top after he managed an 11-7 11-7 6-11 11-7 win over Jonathon Abbott and an 11-5 11-9 5-11 11-6 win against Daniel Thorne. Jonathon also qualified for the semi-final after beating Daniel Thorne 11-1 5-11 11-8 11-6.
In the semi-final Hanson proved too good for a spirited Jonathon Abbott, winning 11-2 11-7 11-7. In the other semi Danny Ricks beat Sam Ricks 13-11 11-4 11-7 to book his place in the final.
The Final saw both players at their best, however it was Hanson who just had a little bit more quality in his attacking shots as he clinched the title 11-6 11-6 11-5. Sam Ricks took third place after beating Jonathon Abbott 11-9 7-11 12-10 11-9.
18-April-2010 - Knockout Cup Final
KNOCKOUT CUP FINAL – WEDNESDAY 7 APRIL 2010
The final was played between Reading Resource and Sonning Common and Peppard F with Resource winning 5-0. Star attraction was three times Commonwealth Champion, Matthew Syed, playing for Resource. Derek Brook-Wavell, the Sonning Common & Peppard ‘F’ captain said the rest of the team 'were dying for the chance to try their skills against Matthew' and welcomed his involvement ‘not only to produce an attractive display of table tennis but to raise its reputation and draw more young people into the sport’. Paul Jarvis was the referee for the evening. Resource captain and coach, Andrew Syed, fielded brother Matthew, Neil Havard and Maureen Allchurch and Sonning Common & Peppard F captain Derek Brook-Wavell fielded himself, Jacek Krzyzanowski and Anthony Reeve.
One of the defining matches of the evening, was between Neil and Derek. This season, Neil has been stretched on many occasions in Division 5 of the Reading league and had been taken to 5 sets on 9 different occasions and twice in the Knockout Cup. Derek was hoping to replicate an outstanding five set victory against Neil earlier in the season but on this occasion it was not to be but nevertheless he played with distinction and pushed Neil very hard in the first two games losing 11-9, 11-9.
The third match was a big upset. Anthony, an orthodox defensive player who has averaged 75% in the league, was pitted against Maureen who has averaged around 40%. Both players traded push to push which made the game long and intriguing to watch. At 9-9 in the fourth game, the longest point of the match was contested which Maureen took. In the best match she has ever played for Resource, Maureen came out the surprising winner in four tight games, 11-9 in the fourth. This victory had the effect of Resource racing to a clear victory.
After the final, Andrew introduced Matthew to the audience to take on all comers after which they were treated to a quite magnificent challenge match between Matthew and youngster Liam McTiernan. The audience were enthralled by the remarkable rallies between the attacking style of Liam against Matthew’s rock solid defence. Liam hit balls all over the hall with Matthew retrieving. Matthew, in his hay day, was regarded as one of the best retrievers and lobbers in the world and came through to win. Summing up, Andrew said he was ‘delighted that the evening had been such a success and was especially pleased that Nigel Maltby, Chairman of the RDDTA was able to attend and also Alan Dines who was recovering from illness and wished him a speedy recovery’.
Andrew Syed.

Could all relevant team captains ensure that all outstanding matches are played by Friday 9th April at the latest.

08-November-2009 - SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING
Notice is hereby given of a SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING of the Reading and District Table Tennis Association to be held at the Sonning Common & Peppard Table Tennis Club on Thursday 26th November 2009, commencing at 7.30 pm.
AGENDA
1. To discuss a request from those involved in the proposed building of a Reading Table Tennis Centre for the Reading & District Table Tennis Association to provide a guarantee of up to £20,000 towards the project i.e. a guarantee of up to £20,000 from the RDTTA Development Fund.
Background – From the Chairman of the RDTTA Management Committee
This matter has been discussed at several RDTTA Management Committee meetings since a presentation at the Reading AGM in June by Peter Bradley, where he outlined the plans to develop a new table tennis centre in Reading. Your committee has voted to guarantee up to £20,000 from the RDTTA Development Fund in support of this development. While the Reading Table Tennis Centre is not an RDTTA project, and while it is appreciated that the Development Fund is a fund set aside for the RDTTA to acquire its own premises, it is believed by the majority of the RDTTA committee that this project may be the best opportunity for Reading to develop its own table tennis centre. Having taken advice, the Committee has agreed that any decision to provide this guarantee should first be put to a Special General Meeting of the Association.
Proposal – The following proposal is also put forward by John Freeman
Funds belonging to Reading and District Table Association must not be given to, transferred to, or otherwise disbursed to, the privately owned Reading Table Tennis Centre or any other organisation, in the absence of a legally binding agreement providing for commensurate valuable consideration for the Association and unless duly authorised by a General Meeting of the Association.”
Club secretaries are asked to ensure all their members receive a copy of this agenda or are made aware of this SGM, at which all members are entitled to attend and vote.
Nigel Maltby
RDTTA CHAIRMAN
Following the Special General Meeting of the Association on Thursday 26th November it has been agreed that the RDTTA will provide a financial guarantee to the Reading Table Tennis Centre project towards the planned development of a dedicated table tennis centre in Reading
30-October-2009 - Roll of Honour
The Roll of Honour, which to date has only appeared in the RDTTA Handbook, is now up on the Website.
But rather than simply list the winners of all RDTTA Tournaments and Awards on one long page (there are over 2000 in all) and you having to scroll through the whole list to find what you’re looking for, the online version allows you to narrow your search before displaying a selected Tournament or Award - or Season.
The Roll of Honour can be found under the History menu item.
Please let us know what you think of this new facility - via the Feedback option.
